Colombo, September 21, 2023 – In a poignant demonstration of resilience and determination, families of 11 individuals who were abducted and disappeared by a Navy team on September 18, 2008, gathered in front of the United Nations office in Tummulla, Colombo today. The event marked the 15th anniversary of this tragic incident, which still haunts their lives.
The families, along with concerned citizens and activists, convened at 9:30 am to hold a silent protest, demanding justice for their loved ones. Despite 15 years passing, justice remains elusive, and the alleged criminals, including some holding high government positions, have yet to be brought to account.
Charges have been filed against 14 individuals in connection with the case, with the former Navy Commander among them as the 14th accused. The families believe that the lack of progress in the investigation is indicative of a grave injustice that must be rectified.
During the protest, the families solemnly handed over a petition to the United Nations and foreign embassies, urging the international community to take notice of their plight and intervene to ensure justice is served.
The disappearance of these individuals is considered a serious crime against humanity, and the families are determined to prevent such tragedies from recurring. Their rallying cry, “Let’s not let that crime happen again!” underscores the urgency of addressing the issue and holding those responsible accountable.
